Hunter Kinney

My name is Hunter Kinney. I graduated from Mason High School in 2012. After high school, I went to Saginaw Valley State University. I transferred to Concordia University Ann Arbor after a couple of years to finish my school and baseball career. After college, I joined the US Navy and I am currently stationed in Guam. I am marrying my beautiful fiancé Jennifer Baker on January 22!

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My amazing parents are Spencer and Tammy Kinney. I have older twin sisters Lindsey Kinney and Olivia Al-Eisa. Olivia is married to her husband Rishad, and they have the most adorable little baby boy, Jude. I have a younger brother Harrison Kinney. I have been truly blessed with an amazing family.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
Currently, I am in the US Navy. I work on a ship like most people in the Navy. It really feels like a normal job, you go to work and go home. The only difference is that it is on a ship. One of the things I enjoy most about my job is the location. Not many people get to say they work in the middle of the pacific on a tropical island. With that being said, I hate being so far away from my fiancé and my family. But Jenn will be moving here after our wedding in January.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
My two favorite restaurants in the area are definitely Klavon’s and City Limits.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I have lived in Mason for my entire life before joining the Navy. So 25 years so far!

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
This is a tough one for me to answer. I really don’t know how I could pick one person. I have had so many amazing teachers and coaches. And I have met so many other amazing people along the way.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
Thailand, that’s where Jenn and I will be going for our honeymoon. If you can’t tell I am very excited to go there with her.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
My favorite movie of all time has to be “Remember the Titans.” I love football, and I really love the message of that movie. My favorite TV show ever is “The Office,” but for a currently running show, it has to be either “Ted Lasso” or “The Real Bro’s of Simi Valley.”

Q: What advice would you give to people?
Always think long and hard about what you want to do for the rest of your life. I graduated college with a degree in a field that I don’t even like very much. But I thought it would just be a safe route. And I never really gave joining the military the time of day until after college. Do what you want to do as a career. Do what makes you happy.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
I love college football, so a bucket list item of mine is to go to all of the B1G Ten stadiums. Preferably when Michigan State is playing there!

Q: Who is your “go-to” band when you can’t decide what music you want to hear?
I like all kinds of music!

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
The business that makes me the most nostalgic has to be City Limits. It will always hold a special place in my heart since we started going there after every football game in High School.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
I would say Kirk Herbstreit. As I mentioned before I love football, and I think he is the best commenter in the game right now. I would love to sit with him and just talk football. And I would take him to Klavon’s because they have the best pizza around.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
I love the closeness about Mason. I have met people from all over America in the Navy, and none of them ever have the great things to say about their towns as I do. It is really a perfect place to grow up.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
Jenn and I have not decided exactly where we want to live after the military, but I know that I want to do full-time firefighting. And Jenn will be continuing her awesome career as an occupational therapist.

Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I am a certified open water diver. SCUBA diving is one of our favorite hobbies. There is nothing cooler than being 60 feet underwater hanging out with turtles, fish, and sometimes even sharks.

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
The most beautiful place that I have ever been to has to be Palma de Mallorca, Spain. If not that I would say Funchal, Portugal. I went to both of these places while I was on the cruise where I met my amazing fiancé.

Q: Favorite month? Favorite holiday? Best single day on the calendar?
My favorite month has to be October because that is prime college football season. My favorite holiday is Christmas. And the best day on the calendar is January 22, the day I get married!

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
My fiancé! But if I can’t say her then I would say anytime that Michigan State beats Michigan in anything.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
Jenn, she is a common theme in my answers. But she is just an amazing woman, she works so hard and always pushes me to be better. I don’t know how I would do it without her.

Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
My favorite smell is the smell of my parents’ house around Christmas. I don’t know what scent my mom uses on the house but it is perfect.

Q: Who would you like to see nominated for The Faces of Ingham County?
Jerry VanHavel.

Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Jenn, Family, Football.
