Scott Casteele

I have been in education for 25 years and owner of Briton Estate Sales. I also have booth space at Maple Street Mall where I buy and sell antiques, collectibles, and nostalgia. I am a single father who has made Mason my home for the last 20 years.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
I grew up in Vermontville where my mother still lives. I moved to Mason 20 years ago and live there with Leilani, my 17-year-old daughter.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I have 25 years in education as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Current High School Athletic Director at Waverly High School in Lansing. 10 years of experience in estate sales. Briton Estate Sales works with local realtors and home sellers to put together tag sales to liquidate house contents and find new homes for treasures.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
I enjoy Klavon’s, Courthouse Pub & Grill, and Bad Brewing.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
20 years.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
I find Debbie Shattuck and Scott Shattuck as well as both of their families as the most interesting and kind members of our Mason community. They are both wonderful people as well as business owners, historians, and parents.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
I enjoy traveling to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island and to the Gulf Shores, Alabama with my daughter for spring break.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
The favorite movies usually center around sports, like Hoosiers, Rocky IV, and Star Wars. My favorite TV shows are Ozark and Billions.

Q: What advice would you give to people?
Never get too high or too low as a reaction to the good and bad in the world. Everything evens out and we control our own happiness and how we face adversity.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
I would like to visit 20 different college football stadiums before I turn 65 years old.

Q: Who is your “go-to” band when you can’t decide what music you want to hear?
Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails, and The Bee Gees.

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Maple Street Mall. There are always things there that allow all of us to relive our youth.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
I would have lunch with Jim Harbaugh and we would have something from Bad Brewing Co.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
I love the courthouse square, the farmers market, and the river walk in our community.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
I see myself retired from education and doing estate sales/antiques full time.

Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I was an All-Conference Tight End for the 1994 National Championship winning Division III football team at Albion College as well as MIAA Champion in the Javelin Throw.

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
Maui, Hawaii. That is where my daughter’s name, Leilani, originated.

Q: Favorite month? Favorite holiday? Best single day on the calendar?
My favorite months are March and July. My favorite holiday is Christmas. The best single day on the calendar is July 22, which is my daughter’s birthday.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
The new mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My late father inspires me to continue on and be better. My mother always has taught me wonderful lessons. Many teachers and coaches that I work with at Waverly High School inspire me daily.

Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
The cereal factories in Battle Creek and popcorn at a ballgame.

Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Home makes me think of being safe, happy, and comfortable.
